Swine and poultry feeds are often contaminated with deoxynivalenol (DON),\u00a0which is known to be the most at risk mycotoxin\u00a0for livestock.\u00a0DON is known to\u00a0damage the integrity and function of the intestine. In this study, Jia\u00a0et al.\u00a0investigated the effects of DON on the\u00a0intestinal microbiota of chickens and pigs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Gut microflora is affected by DON<\/h3>\r\n\r\n

The study revealed that\u00a0DON can cause intestinal flora imbalance. DON increased the relative abundance of Firmicutes and decreased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, resulting in a significant increase in the Firmicutes\/Bacteroidetes ratio in\u00a0pigs\u00a0(Fig.\u00a01F).\u00a0A\u00a0high ratio of Firmicutes\/\u00a0Bacteroidetes has been associated with diarrhea.\u00a0DON also significantly decreased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria in broiler intestines (Fig.\u00a01E).\u00a0In addition,\u00a0Prevotella\u00a0abundance decreased, and\u00a0Prevotella\u00a0is beneficial for intestinal homeostasis and health.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It is suggested\u00a0that the\u00a0observed\u00a0changes in intestinal microflora\u00a0are\u00a0mainly related\u00a0to the\u00a0changes induced by DON on\u00a0metabolism and digestive function of\u00a0the\u00a0animals.\u00a0Finally,\u00a0the\u00a0trends in the intestine of broilers and pigs\u00a0had similarities\u00a0as well as\u00a0differences. This\u00a0may be related to the intensity of DON-induced toxicity\u00a0in each species.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
