The main<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\">histological changes <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\">observed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\"> in animals treated with DON were villi<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\">atrophy and fusion, with flattening of enterocytes<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\"> (Fig. 1)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\"> At the molecular level<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\">, a trend<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\">of decreased expression of cytokines and genes implicated in the immune response (IL-1\u03b2,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\">IL-1\u03b1, IFN-\u03b3, TGF-\u03b21) was <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\">observed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\"> in animals receiving feed contaminated with <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\">0.9 ppm<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176038788 BCX0\"> of DON compared to the control animals.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW176038788 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">DON exposure also affected pigs \u2018liver. Ingestion of DON caused disorganization, cytoplasmic vacuolization and megalocytosis of hepatocytes. A significant decrease in the gene expression of ABCA1, implicated in the cholesterol transport, was seen in the 0.9 ppm DON group. The other genes implicated in the immune response (IL-1\u03b1) and in satiety (CCK) show a trend of decreased expression in the low-DON group. In contrast, genes implicated in oxidative stress (SOD1, SOD2) show a trend of increased expression.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In conclusion, the findings of this study indicate that the EU regulatory level of 0.9 mg DON\/kg feed induces lesions in the intestine and liver, and the modulation of the inflammatory response.
